Background. At the modern stage of education there is a necessity in increasing the importance of art subjects for spiritual-moral education of the new generation. Recently there has been a constant pressure from the bodies of education administration to reduce the subjects of artistic-esthetic cycle due to insufficient funds for school maintenance. This allows to understand the importance of art subjects in moral education of children and the problem of spiritual-moral personality traits formation in order to strengthen national consciousness, preserve historical, cultural roots.
Materials and methods. Realization of research tasks was achieved through the usage of theoretical materials on spiritual-moral education in all aspects:: theoretical-methodological (E.P. Belozertsev, B.M. Bim-Bad, N.D. Nikandrov and others); scientific-theoretical (N.I. Lifintseva, N.V. Maslov, A.V. Mudrik and others); historical-pedagogical (Z.V. Vidyakova, M.V. Boguslavsky and others); methodological (B.M. Nemensky, A.M. Vinogradova, N.K. Shabanov and others). Methodological potential includes the method of comparative analysis, application of which allows to build a real picture of spiritual-moral education of the new generation in a modern school; the system approach, the importance of which is obvious for systematization of a large amount of theoretical and methodological developments in order to determine functional value of subjects of artistic-esthetic cycle in society’s life.
Results. The author researched functional purpose of subjects of artistic-esthetic cycle in society’s life in order to generalize the importance of theoretical search of a model of building spiritual-moral education at all the levels of modern education. The author considered the specifics of the problem of lack of emotional criteria of formation of a personality and a quality model of of the system of artistic-esthetic education at school.
Conclusions. Study of the need for holistic understanding of formation and development of a modern system of spiritual-moral education, as well as systematizetion of a large amount of theoretical and methodological developments in the present field allows to ascertain the functional value of subjects of artistic-esthetic cycle in society’s life, to take into account the specifics of personality’s emotional criteria formation, to determine new searches of formation of spiritual-moral education at all the levels of modern education.
